Founded in the late 19th century, Anchor is one of the very few small American breweries to survive the post-Prohibition consolidation of the beer industry. Run without success for many years, by 1965 it was on the verge of bankruptcy when Fritz Maytag stepped in and bought controlling interest of the company for a few thousand dollars. He apparently thought owning a brewery would be fun.

Under Maytag, the brewery slowly built up a reputation for excellence. By the 1990s, Anchor beers had become readily available throughout much of the United States.
